Tips

Here are some tips that we find useful, we hope you do too:

  • To work out how much cover you may need, use a budget calculator to understand your weekly or monthly incomings and outgoings.
  • Everyone has different needs, and not one size fits all when it comes to term life insurance.  Choose a length of cover that is right for you, often this will be the length or a mortgage term or until children or dependents have left home.
  • If you have some life cover provided through your work, try and work out if this cover is enough for you and your needs.  Take this into account when deciding on taking out any additional cover or policies, and if you choose to speak to a financial adviser make sure that they are aware of any other policies you may have.
  • If you are not sure about what sort of cover you need or the level of cover that is right for you, ask for professional advice.  A good financial adviser will be able to help you understand what you need and what you can afford.
  • Always keep your policy in a safe place, and make sure that any loved ones know that you have the policy and where it is kept.
  • Make sure that you tell insurers of any pre-existing medical conditions that you may have and provide accurate up to date information.  Not doing this may affect any claim that is made on the policy.
  • You can buy joint life policies to cover yourself and a loved one, ask your insurer about this option and if it is right for you.
  • Review the amount of cover and type of policy you have on a regular basis, moving home, changing jobs or having a baby are all events that may impact on the cover you need.
