Why we are campaigning
The Bank is committed to upholding human rights, and you, our customers, have consistently told us this is an issue that you feel particularly strongly about. Based on our customers’ concerns, we have had an Ethical Policy position on human rights since 1992.
Through our investments, we seek to support the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In line with this, we will not invest in:
Any government or business which fails to uphold basic human rights within its sphere of influence.
Any business whose links to an oppressive regime are a continuing cause for concern.
Our customers have been vocal in their concern about human rights issues, and 98% of our customers support the above statements on human rights.
We’ve turned away over £54 million worth of business that conflicts with our Ethical Policy position on human rights since 1992.
What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
In 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). It consists of 30 statements, or ‘articles’ to which all UN Member countries agree to ensure a basic standard of human rights for all people. From freedom of expression, freedom from slavery and torture, to a right to education, the UDHR inspires a continued struggle for equal human rights and living standards around the world.
