2001: Ethical Consumerism report
Ethical Purchasing Index 2001
The Co-operative Bank's 2001 Ethical Purchasing Index (EPI) measures the value of ethical purchases for a selected basket of goods in seven categories of consumer expenditure (from food to household goods). With a base in 1999 of 100, the index for 2000 stands at 115 - a 15% rise over the year. Ethical spending across the seven sectors grew by 18% between 1999 and 2000. This represents an increase of £867m, taking the total value of these markets to £5.7bn. A further £7.8bn is invested or deposited in values-based investments and bank accounts, meaning that the total value of ethical consumer power is £13.4bn. The twelve page report on the EPI 2001 reveals more about the basket of goods, market share for particular goods and sectors and total sales data for the same sectors.
