On the road

  1. 1 go public

try to use public transport whenever you can – it takes up half the fuel you'd have used if you did the same journey in your car.

  2. 2 lighten the load

remove heavy loads from the boot of your car and you'll use less fuel to get about.

  3. 3 make a change!

be careful when disposing of your car's waste oil. 1 litre of oil can pollute 1 million litres of fresh drinking water. Take it to a council recycling centre.

  4. 4 drop the drop-offs

sharing the school-run with other parents is a great way to cut congestion and reduce CO2 emissions. For more information visit www.school-run.org .

  5. 5 burn calories, not fuel

short journeys cause the most pollution because your car's engine is not warmed up. Next time you're popping to the shops why not walk or hop on your bike?
